Between Forests and Reservoirs: Verdaguer’s Land of Legends
The Vall de Sau is located in the western part of the Osona region, dominated by the iconic Sau Reservoir and surrounded by dramatic cliffs and dense woodlands. This is a territory of high ecological and scenic value, forming part of the Guilleries-Savassona Natural Area, a protected space perfect for hiking and nature lovers.
We recommend exploring its paths and viewpoints, either on your own or by joining one of the many guided tours and activities regularly offered. It’s worth checking the local schedule to make the most of your visit.
At the heart of the valley lies the Sau Reservoir, where you can enjoy various water activities or — depending on the water level — see the haunting remains of the old village of Sant Romà de Sau, whose bell tower still rises from the depths. The surrounding cliffs and natural scenery make this a postcard-perfect location.
Another unmissable stop is the Monastery of Sant Pere de Casserres, a former Benedictine monastery perched on a bend of the Ter River. Its historical importance and striking location make it one of the most spectacular heritage sites in the area.
On the way there, don’t miss two cultural gems. In Sant Julià de Vilatorta, the Art i Mur mural route showcases the town’s traditional craft of ceramic. And in Folgueroles, the birthplace of the celebrated Catalan poet Jacint Verdaguer, you can visit his childhood home and learn more about his literary legacy and deep connection to the Catalan identity.
To stay overnight in a camper van while visiting the Vall de Sau, you can use the camper areas in Sant Julià de Vilatorta and Vilanova de Sau, both ideally located for exploring the reservoir and cultural sites.
